“We’re Going Streaking”

After the smoke cleared on Sunday in Houston, the Undertaker’s Wrestlemania streak was still alive. The Deadman and HBK put on a hell of a match, one that was my favorite of the evening. Like he has done so many times in the past, the Taker got the pinfall thanks to a steady diet of chokeslams and tombstones. The match was so action packed I was surprised good ‘ol JR (Jim Ross) was able to speak afterwards. After executing his second tombstone after a vintage Undertaker reversal, the Taker pinned Michaels, pushing his record at Wrestlemania to 17-0. On the biggest stage in sports entertainment, the Undertaker has been perfect. Let’s compare the Taker’s streak to some of the other great streaks in sports:

  • Undertaker- 17-0 at Wrestlemania (List of results)
  • Joe DiMaggio- 56 game hit streak
  • UCLA- 7 straight NCAA Championships
  • Orel Hershiser- 59 consecutive scoreless innings
  • Tom Burgoyne (aka Philly Phanatic)- longest serving mascot, full-time since 1994

Obviously the Undertaker’s dominance doesn’t match up to any of these real sports accomplishments (perhaps with the exception of the Phanatic), but it is still impressive.

Wrestling is fake, and everyone knows that (sorry to any little kids or to you Ben [my friend who’s “in the business”]). The results are predetermined, but you have to be a pretty good wrestler to win that much on such a grand stage. As far as sports streaks go, DiMaggio, UCLA and Hershiser take the cake, but when it comes to sports entertainment…. the Undertaker is the king.

  1. Ric Flair’s 16 World Titles, Goldberg’s 173 match win streak, or Undertaker 17-0. Which is the best wrestling accomplishment?

  2. Like the Undertaker has done 17 times at Wrestlemania, several teams have never lost on the grandest stage. Here is the list I just saw on Sportscenter:

    49ers- 5-0 in Superbowls
Da Bulls- 6-0 in NBA Championships
UConn Women- 6-0 in NCAA Championship games
