LT done in SD

LaDainian Tomlinson was released by the Chargers on Monday in a move that seemed inevitable for San Diego. Tomlinson entered the point of no return for NFL running backs last year when he celebrated his 30th birthday. He experienced  a large decline in yards, running for only 730 yards after gaining over 1,100 in 2008. His yards per carry average has gone down each of the past two seasons, and so will his spot on the draft board in fantasy leagues in 2010.

It was a great run for the greatest back of the decade, but  LT will have to try and reinvent himself after 30 and he’ll have to do it with a new team. The guy is a future Hall-of-Famer with more than 150 touchdowns and 12,000 career yards but he will have to compete for carries like he’s an average Joe. Tomlinson did show signs of life last year, scoring 12 times, and is hoping to build on that and prosper in his 30’s much like fellow 30+ back Thomas Jones has done with the Jets.

At age 31, Jones rushed for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns after rushing for 1,300 yards and 13 TD’s as at 30. If Tomlinson hopes to post those kinds of numbers at 31, he better pray to land on a team with a great line like the one Jones has run behind in his three years with the Jets. Only time will tell what the free agent market will bring for Tomlinson.
