Tough Guy Competition

No participant completed every obstacle in this year's race

I know people who have run marathons, done triathlons, and participated in Beerlympics, and no disrespect to those people, I think the Tough Guy Competition takes the cake for toughest race around.

Tough Guy has been going on for over 20 years (which surprises me that I’ve never heard of it), with people from all walks of life from all over the world participating.  The course designer states that you will need both physical and mental strength to complete the grueling 12 kilometer course, but you’re gonna need more than that. (See map at bottom)

You can find tough guys everywhere: in the gym, at the bar, on the road; but the true Tough Guys come out to the big race every year to merry old England. Why are they the toughest? Well for starters, in order to participate you have to sign a death warrant. And if you really love the being a tough guy, you can check a box on the waiver to be buried right on the tough guy field, a place where only true tough guys can lay to eternal rest.

I’m not sure what the toughest part of this race is; maybe crawling past the spider web netting with barbed wire, or maybe crawling through the tire crawl that resembles the touch tunnel at Liberty Science Center only can tear off your flesh.  Some might say it’s the hanging jelly fish tentacles that give you an electric shock or the fiery holes and humps you have to run through. But I think it would be the ice-cold water tunnels with signs stating, “Remember you have signed a death warrant” before you plunge in.

I’ve never participated in any type of organized race, but I think this could be the one for me. I mean if a 50-year old woman or 16-year old “tough gal” can do it, I think I got a good shot. January 2012, who’s coming with me!!??
